Seeking An Extraordinary Life

One man's quest to become a bit braver, stronger, healthier, weirder and more extraordinary. I got rid of everything I owned and I'm going round the world.

This site has now been retired. I've moved to my new site Silverknife, where you'll find new blog posts and all my latest projects and photos. These pages will remain for at least a while, as I know some of you are still looking through the archives, but I'm reposting my travel journals and many other articles on the new site. Come and check it out.

30th of October 2008 - Where Do I Go From Here?

So, I'm home, almost recovered from the jetlag, mostly unpacked and reasonably settled back in...where do I go from here?

In the shortterm it's going to be a pretty packed few weeks. Next weekend I'm going up to Sheffield (my mum's real hometown) to see my brother and sister and any other relatives who are available. On the 12th it's my birthday, and the following day (if all goes to plan) I'll be flying out to Dublin, meeting up with my old mate Neil from Belfast and attending Smokin' Craic, the Irish Burning Man Decompression event. And the day after I get back I hope to be starting a job, although I don't know what it's going to be yet.

In the meantime I'm booked pretty solid catching up with friends and family, getting in all the things I've been missing, catching up on email and generally settling back in. In my free time I'm attacking my vast book pile and trying to squeeze in some writing. I've got a bunch of followup blog posts I want to get in, I've got to decide what to do with the blog as it stands (maybe package it as a book and shop it around some publishers), and I'm seriously considering a lunatic plan to participate in this year's NaNoWriMo, an attempt by thousands of aspiring writers around the world to produce an entire 50,000 word novel during the month of November.

Longer term: I'm going to work at least through to the middle of January, maybe mid-February, and then I'm seriously considering relocating myself to Northern Ireland for a few months (or longer). My dad's from Belfast, and I've always wanted to properly get to know the land of my forefathers - it's such a beautiful, strange and varied country. It seems like a good time to do it, before I get really dug in with a job and a place. Further plans on that in the next month or so.

After that: Well, I do plan to resume the big journey in the not too distant future. Depending on income, savings and other factors, it'll be in a year or two. I'll get a fair chunk of money together first, and I intend to pick up again right where I left off - flying back to Mexico City and continuing south.

I'll be back on here again in a couple of days with some more followup posts, but updates will be intermittent. Again, I'd recommend any of you who are coming back to this page regularly to check for updates to sign up for the email service or the RSS feed. That way you'll get all updates straight to your inbox or your feed aggregator when they turn up, and save yourself a lot of time.
